When I arranged my first newborn session since having Natalie, I don’t think I was prepared for how it would make me feel. I walked into the Olson’s home filled with excitement to get back into something I had been missing. Jen is such a dear friend of mine, and this would be our third newborn session together. Seeing those littles run up to me for welcome hugs was wonderful and surreal.
The world of photography in Maryland is different than it is in, say, Florida or Arizona. Up here in the northeast, we get hit hard with the seasons, and this means that our photography year also functions in seasons. And even though there are most certainly benefits to being busy year round, every year I find myself welcoming the calm season that comes right after Christmas. Fall is always packed to the brim with adorable babies, happy families, and glorious weddings. Add the fun and craziness of the holidays to that, and a little winter break is just what I need as we move into the new year.
Every time I do a newborn session, I’m struck by how different babies are, even at just a few days old. It’s common knowledge that no two people are the same, but a lot of people think of newborns as just sleepy little bundles of cute. Which they are, of course. I do love each and every baby I meet.
Awake babies seem to be my thing these days! The following post contains a lot of wide awake shots, but they happen to be adorable, so I bet you won’t mind! You’ll also get to see a bunch of sweet little outfits and props and a loving cousin and fur brother. So, trust me, it’s worth your time!
I’ve mentioned before (several times) how much a newborn photographer loves a sleeping baby. Sleeping babies are peaceful. Sleeping babies don’t cry. Sleeping babies don’t mind being put down on a big blanket, or wrapped up in a gauzy swaddle, or squished into wicker basket.
Ask a central Marylander how they are today, and I guarantee you, somewhere in the first few sentences, you’ll hear the word “hot”. It is hot here right now. We may get all four seasons, but they sometimes get thrown at us randomly. Right now we’ve skipped right to mid-summer meltdown temperatures. The AC units are clicking on, the cars are baking, and the pools are hoppin’.
Oh my goodness! Where do I even begin with this adorable session? Maybe with the loving older brother? Or the beautiful baby girl? Or the amazing set of headbands I can’t stop thinking about? How about just all of it?
Give me a warm spring day, an energetic toddler, and a content newborn, and I’ll take photos all day long! I actually almost did. Then I remembered my manners and let the Fuscos eat their dinner. I feel like over the past few weeks I’ve had the opportunity to get very close to this wonderful family. Being a part of such important moments in their lives has allowed us to connect on a personal level. Those connections are the very best part of taking photos and every time I form a new friendship like this one, it gives me such a thrill.
If you’ve ever been lucky enough to visit a baby in the hospital before they come home, you will understand me when I say it is humbling. Meeting a human within the first few days of their life is just incredible. This person is going to grow up to do grown up person things. He will have a personality and interests and hobbies. She will have favorite books and movies and start a career, maybe several. And here you are, meeting them at the very beginning of it all.
I cannot believe that Charlie is almost one! Ashley and Ray are not only about to check “Survived Year 1 of Parenting” off their list, they also can check off “Survived Year 1 of Parenting WHILE Moving Into Our Forever Home” all in one swoop. In the weeks leading up to this shoot, Ashley and I talked multiple times about where to take their photos. After bouncing several ideas back and forth, we finally decided to take them right in their home! I’ve mentioned before how much I love in-home sessions, and this shoot only reinforced that.
